A Burst of Spring Colour

It has been a painting Spring for me.

Spending time near to home, down the lane, I have been sitting close to an area of ancient woodland. In the dappled shade of the wood I charted the first of our wildflowers and the pollinating insects that so rely on each other.

I was struck by the radiance of the yellow petals of the Primrose and noticed that whether it was morning or evening their flowers stayed open. I saw the bee-fly, a bee mimic, as well as bumblebees diving so deep into the centre of the flower that their hum echoed in the chamber of the flower. The drawings from these moments were the inspiration for my Primrose and Bee painting.

This spring has brought us many sharp winds and late frosts. On early walks I feel enchanted by the frosty patterns on each leaf and the cool tones of the shivering flower buds.

To share the magic of this experience I painted First Flowers, Last Frost.
