From Sketch to Print

This August, I went on holiday to the North Devon coast. Our camping field was edged with wildflower banks, with cows grazing just beyond.
Swallows swooped low over the grass, sifting through the whirring insects. I made a few playful sketches of their flight, working mainly with pastel highlighter pens and a black brush pen. The lilac tones suggested the sweeping shapes of the swallows, while the brush pen added movement and contrast.

One day, I walked high along the coast path to Mortehoe. The sea was calm, the sun was bright, and to my delight I came across a small colony of seals.
Perched near the cliff edge, I sketched them—my first ever drawings of wild seals—as waves and ripples flowed gently over their sleek bodies. See if you can spot the prints that I made from some of these drawings. Would you like to hear more about sketching outdoors then let me know.
